Industry Fees for IRB Review
Overview
The Stanford IRB charges review fees for industry-sponsored clinical trials.
Investigators must ensure that the study budget can cover these costs for the for the full span of the study’s activity at Stanford. Unpaid fees may delay IRB review processes.
Fee amounts are reassessed every 3-5 years and changes may occur. A new fee schedule will be released anytime fees change.

An electronic invoice is sent upon completion of the IRB’s review of the submission. Generally, the electronic invoice is sent at the same time as the submission’s approval letter. The electronic invoice will be sent via email to the Protocol Director and the main contacts on the IRB application, and will include the fee amount as well as instructions for how to make a payment.
Industry sponsors are responsible for study-wide modifications that apply to all sites. When an industry sponsor submits amended documents to the Stanford study team for submission to the IRB, this is considered a sponsor-initiated modification and will be charged an IRB review fee. These modifications most often include the following:
- Changes to the protocol;
- Changes to the investigator brochure or device manual; or
- Changes to study-wide informed consent language and recruitment materials.
If the Stanford study team needs to make site-specific changes to a study, which do not affect the sponsor’s documents or the other sites, this local modification will not be charged an IRB review fee. These modifications most often include the following:
- Changes to study personnel; or
- Changes to site-specific informed consent language and recruitment materials.
All continuing review submissions are charged a fee.
- The fee is applied to continuing reviews that are assigned to either the convened board or for expedited review.
- The fee is applied to continuing reviews that report zero enrollment or are closed to enrollment.
Please ensure the study budget will cover all continuing review fees for the lifetime of the study being open and active at Stanford University.
